Theoretical Training

If you want to get your driver's license, the first step is to enroll in a driving school. There, you'll learn everything you need to know about driving—both in theory and in practice.

However, before you’re allowed to get behind the wheel yourself, you’ll first need to learn the theoretical basics. This is also required by law: theory and practice should go hand in hand and complement each other perfectly during your training. So, unfortunately, you won’t be able to get your driver’s license without any theory classes!

The specific topics covered in class are prescribed by law in a fixed curriculum with specific subjects. For example, if you’re getting a Class B driver’s license, you can expect the following lessons in the theory portion:

• Topic 1: Personal Qualifications
  You'll learn what physical and mental requirements are important for driving safely.
   
• Topic 2: Human Risk Factors
  This is about how emotions, stress, fatigue, or even alcohol affect your driving behavior.
   
• Topic 3: Legal Framework
  You'll learn the most important basic rules, what documents you need, and how to respond after an accident.
   
• Topic 4: Road Traffic System
  This section explains who is allowed to use which roads and how to behave properly at bus stops and railroad crossings.
   
• Topic 5: Right of Way
  The classic "right-of-way" rule and everything else that determines who has the right of way at intersections and junctions and who must wait.
   
• Topic 6: Traffic Signs and Equipment
  You'll learn what all the signs, traffic lights, lines, and markings on the road mean.
   
• Topic 7: Other Road Users
  This is about showing special consideration for pedestrians, cyclists, children, and older adults.
   
• Topic 8: Speed, Distance, and Environmental Protection
  You'll learn how fast you're allowed to drive in different areas, why maintaining a safe following distance is vital, and how to drive in a fuel-efficient manner.
   
• Topic 9: Driving Maneuvers and Traffic Awareness
  This covers safe turning, making U-turns, backing up, changing lanes, and passing.
   
• Topic 10: Stationary Traffic
  Everything you need to know about proper parking, parallel parking, and how to park your car safely without obstructing others.
   
• Topic 11: Special Situations and Penalties
  You'll learn how to drive safely in the dark, in the rain, in fog, or in a tunnel, and what happens if you commit a traffic violation (keyword: probationary period).
   
• Topic 12: Lifelong Learning
  This lesson shows you that even after passing the exam, you can still keep improving through practice and continuing education.

The two specific topics for Class B (car):

• Topic 13: Technical Requirements
  You'll gain a basic understanding of automotive technology, check your car's roadworthiness (e.g., tires and brakes), and learn how to use it in an environmentally responsible way.
   
• Topic 14: Driving with a Trailer and Cargo
  Here you'll learn what you need to keep in mind—both legally and in terms of driving techniques—when transporting heavy items, luggage, or multiple passengers.
